In September, the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced that Portland Japanese Garden Chief Curator and Japanese Garden Training Center Director Sadafumi (Sada) Uchiyama will be among those honored in their ASLA Oregon Recognition Awards program. This program “celebrates the spirit of the landscape architecture profession in Oregon by recognizing people and organizations for their outstanding service to the profession, design excellence, community leadership, and careful stewardship.”
KOIN-TV, Portland’s CBS affiliate, covered Japan Institute of Portland Japanese Garden’s peace programming in Japan, which included dedication ceremonies of donated Peace Lanterns to the cities of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Tokyo, as well as a Peace Symposium on the United Nations International Day of Peace.
Steve Bloom, Chief Executive Officer of Portland Japanese Garden and the Japan Institute, has been awarded the Kaneko Kentaro Award. The honor, referred to as the Kaneko Award, was established by the America-Japan Society in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding. This award has been bestowed upon Bloom in recognition of his longstanding contributions to grassroots exchanges between Japan and the United States.
On September 7, 2022, the Japan Institute of Portland Japanese Garden hosted a lecture from Jason James, Director General of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London, England.
Portland Japanese Garden is delighted to share that its final art exhibition of 2022, Garden of Resonance, will feature the work of internationally acclaimed artist Jun Kaneko (b. 1942). Kaneko, winner of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center, has made major contributions to the field of sculptural art on a global scale, exploring the relationships between art, nature, and people with their bold scale and placement.
Here in Portland, all the unseasonal June rainfall has revealed a lush and verdant summer scene in the Pacific Northwest, especially at Portland Japanese Garden. We’re more than halfway through another exceptional year, and I take great pleasure in reaching out to share some of the highlights of what we’ve been up to.
